How to Measure Whether Your Marketing Agency Is Actually Working
Agency AdviceStart with a baseline
You cannot tell if something improved if you do not know where you started. Before work begins, write down current numbers: monthly enquiries, website visits, bookings or sales, and where they come from. Even rough numbers are useful.
Metrics that matter
- Enquiries and leads: calls, DMs, form fills, WhatsApp messages.
- Cost per enquiry or per lead: total spend divided by results.
- Conversion: how many enquiries become customers.
- Source: which channel and which piece of content brought them.
- Retention: do customers come back?
The Beverly Hills project is a good example. We tracked qualified enquiries against the content calendar so results could be traced to specific work, which is set out in the case study.
Metrics that only look good
Followers, likes and impressions are not useless, but they are easy to inflate and easy to celebrate without any business result. Treat them as signs of health, not proof of success. A steady rise in followers with flat enquiries is a warning.
What good reporting looks like
- Short and readable, ideally one page of headlines plus detail.
- Results tied to your goals, not a data dump.
- What worked, what did not, and what changes next month.
- Honest about mistakes.
If a report needs a decoder to understand, ask for a simpler one.
Check the follow-through on your side
Sometimes the agency is doing fine and the leak is elsewhere: slow replies, an old website, no way to book. Fix what you control. Look at your own site's speed too, as we describe in our PageSpeed story.
When to give it more time, and when to leave
Give social and SEO at least three months before judging. Leave if you cannot get clear answers, if numbers are hidden, if promises keep shifting, or if you do not own your accounts. A good agency welcomes a review. If you are still choosing one, start with how to choose a digital marketing agency in Indore.
Frequently asked questions
What KPIs should I track for a marketing agency?
Enquiries, leads, cost per lead, conversion to customers and the source of each. Followers and reach are secondary.
How often should I review agency performance?
A short monthly review and a deeper quarterly one works for most businesses.
How long should I wait for results?
Paid campaigns can show signals within weeks. Organic social and SEO usually need three to six months.
What if the agency will not share data?
That is a red flag. You should have access to your own ad accounts, analytics and reports.
