Meta Ads for Local Businesses in India: Budgets, Audiences and the Mistakes We See Most
Paid MediaDecide the goal before the budget
Meta lets you optimise for reach, traffic, messages, leads and sales. Pick the one that matches what you want. A restaurant may want table bookings by phone; a venue may want WhatsApp enquiries; a clinic may want form leads. Running "for awareness" and hoping it turns into bookings is the most common way to waste money.
How much should you spend?
There is no universal number, and be careful with anyone who claims one. As a rough starting point, many local businesses test with a small daily budget for a couple of weeks and scale only what produces enquiries at a cost they can afford. The maths that matters is simple: what is an enquiry worth, and what does it cost you to get one?
Remember that agency fees and ad spend are separate. We explain that split in our guide to social media management costs.
Choose audiences you can describe
- Start with location: the city, a radius around your venue, or specific areas.
- Add only the targeting that reflects real customers: age range, interests, life events. Over-narrowing starves the system of data.
- Try a retargeting audience: people who watched your videos or visited your page.
- Exclude existing customers when you are chasing new ones.
Creative is the biggest lever
Ad platforms do more of the targeting automatically now, which makes creative the thing you control most. Real photos and video of your actual place, team and product beat glossy stock. Show the result the customer wants in the first second, then a clear offer and a single call to action.
Test a few different angles (price, experience, testimonial, process) instead of one ad in five sizes.
Send people somewhere that makes enquiring easy
If an ad clicks through to a slow homepage with no obvious next step, you paid for nothing. Use a simple landing page or a click-to-WhatsApp flow, keep the form short, and make sure someone replies quickly. Speed of reply changes results more than most ad tweaks.
Mistakes we see most
- Boosting posts without a goal or audience.
- Changing everything every day, so the platform never learns.
- Judging by clicks or likes instead of enquiries.
- Not tracking where enquiries come from.
- Ignoring the follow-up: slow replies or no phone call back.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good daily budget for Meta ads?
It depends on your goal and market. Start small enough that a bad test does not hurt, and let results tell you when to scale.
Should I boost posts or use Ads Manager?
Ads Manager gives you far more control over goals, audiences and reporting. Boosting is fine for a quick test but rarely the best long-term approach.
How long until ads work?
Give a campaign several days to exit the learning phase before changing it, and a couple of weeks to judge a trend.
Do I need a website to run Meta ads?
Not always. Click-to-WhatsApp and lead forms work without one, but a fast landing page usually converts better.
